The Audi Q7 has been around since 2005. Anyone would think it would be getting a bit long in the tooth by now, but Audi’s updates keep the car fresh, and the 2020 Q7 is making some fantastic refinements.

This vehicle has more of what Audi buyers love, like its roomy interiors and powerful drivetrains, and a few extra features besides. We’re here to let you know what to expect when it comes to the U.S. in early 2020.

Interior and exterior

The 2020 Audi Q7 has had a little bit of a facelift. The frontend is more angular, giving it a tighter, more muscular look. Vertical slats back the grille, and the headlights have been reshaped.

Audi has also painted the lower sills, bumpers, and wheel arches gray. The sides bulge less, too. At the back, there’s a chrome strip connecting the taillights. The changes may be subtle, but they’ve improved the car’s looks.

Inside, the most immediately visible changes are on the dash. The MMI pop-up interface has gone, replaced by the dual-screen set up found on the latest Audis, complete with haptic feedback. Behind the screens, there’s some hidden storage space for all those little items.

The interior is as roomy as you’ve come to expect from the Q7. The front seats have eight-way power adjustments, while heated leather seats are standard. You can opt for up to 18-point power adjustments, massage seats, and cooled seats as options if you prefer.

Engines and suspension

The 2020 Audi Q7 sports a decent variety of engine options, including the hybrid system found on the A8, which sports a KERS-like system, but the Q7 is also set to get a plug-in hybrid variant. Other engine options are likely to include the two-liter base engine.

However, given the A8-style hybrid system, we’re unlikely to see the turbocharged three-liter V6 return. AWD will be standard, and the eight-speed automatic transmission will make a return.

All-wheel steering will be available as an option, for improved handling in poor weather, while air suspension and adjustable dampeners will be available to further enhance the already-serene ride.


New safety tech will be making its debut on the new Audi Q7, including adaptive cruise assist, which means the Q7 can use adaptive cruise control even in traffic.

Emergency assist, as featured on several other Audi models, is set to feature on the Q7 too, bringing the vehicle to a stop and alerting emergency services should the driver become unresponsive.

The instrument cluster features Audi’s Virtual Cockpit technology, with customizable speedometers and the option to project Google Earth. The cockpit can be customized to an insane degree, with any number of different readouts taking center stage, should you desire. Voice commands can be used to control it.

Passenger comfort and utility

The rear passenger seats feature heated leather, in addition to plenty of head and legroom. The third row of seats is suitable only for children, however, with any reasonably-sized adult having to double up as an acrobat to achieve any degree of comfort.

The cargo space has increased by a humble 0.6 cubic feet to 72.4 cubic feet. Either way you slice it, and however small an increase it may be, you’ll have no trouble fitting everything you need in the Audi Q7.

Drive and safety

The aforementioned active roll stabilization and all-wheel steering should improve the Q7’s handling, making it feel less like an SUV and more like a performance sedan. In terms of safety, the 2019 version of the Audi Q7 earned top ratings from both National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

Likely, the adaptive cruise control and emergency assist functions will only improve upon these top-tier scores.
