The 2020 Acadia is a Midsize SUV with serious tech and torque

Quick Notes:

– The GMC Acadia is one of the most popular midsize SUVs on the market, but its creators aren’t resting on their laurels

– The 2020 version of the Acadia has new features impacting its performance and comfort-related features

– From new drivetrains to elevated tech options, the 2020 Acadia has made significant strides that prospective car buyers will want to take note of

The Acadia’s track record speaks for itself

The 2020 GMC Acadia is far from the first version of this midsize SUV worth paying attention to — it’s only the latest. The Acadia has been popular since the first model hit the market in 2006. The earliest versions of the Acadia had much in common with the Buick Enclave and Chevrolet Traverse, two other GM-produced SUVs.

2009 marked a year of substantial improvement for the Acadia, as the base model was engineered with a 3.6-liter V-6 engine, providing additional power. In 2013 GMC hit the Acadia with a makeover, giving it a sportier look that was received well by the marketplace.

Fast forward to 2020, and the GMC Acadia has once again been given the revamp treatment. It offers an array of new features that impact the midsize SUV’s performance as well as its interior features. From new tech to new drivetrains, there’s much to explore with the 2020 Acadia.

You may not recognize the new exterior

The first thing we notice when we see a car is its exterior, naturally, which is why that’s the first change to the 2020 Acadia we’re talking about. The 2020 Acadia comes with some notable exterior changes to the headlights, grille, and hood.

The grille is more prominent than the previous versions of the Acadia, commanding attention of its own while giving the feel of a larger SUV. Meanwhile, the headlights appear sharper, less-rounded than the headlights on the 2019 Acadia, which included several curves and even a tail-like feature.

The hood of the 2020 Acadia features a more prominent crease that feeds nicely into the enlarged grille. Each of these features gives the front of the Acadia a bolder look than its previous iterations.

The rear exterior also features some changes, including larger taillights and square exhaust pipes. These changes are meant to make a statement of boldness, and they have the intended effect.

About that power…

Any prospective car owner should want to know one critically important thing, more so than any other consideration: how fast does it go?

Anybody thinking about purchasing a 2020 GMC Acadia would be well within their rights to ask the same thing. Here are the answers to that question:

The 2020 GMC Acadia comes with three engine options: four-cylinder, V6, or a new optional turbocharged four-cylinder. The V6 is the most powerful of the lot, producing 310 horsepower. The turbocharged four-cylinder puts out 230 horsepower, while the base 2.5-liter four-cylinder produces 193 horsepower.

Yet another new feature of the 2020 GMC Acadia is a nine-speed automatic transmission, which replaces the six-speed transmission of the previous year. That transmission is expected to produce better fuel economy, though the official numbers on the 2020 Acadia’s fuel efficiency are yet to be published.

The designers didn’t forget the interior, either

The exterior of a vehicle may make the first impression, but it’s the interior that will leave a more lasting memory. The engineers and designers behind the 2020 GMC Acadia didn’t forget this, making several improvements to the vehicle’s interior worth noting.

Much remains the same in terms of the layout of the car’s dash. But one significant change is the switch from a traditional gear shifter to buttons. This is a significant (and somewhat polarizing) change that gives the dash a significantly different look, even if you don’t notice at first what’s missing.

The 2020 GMC Acadia’s infotainment system remains consistent with last year’s model but includes improved graphics and a new “one-shot” feature that you may find auto-finishing addresses as you enter them.

Seating and safety

There are new developments worth noting when it comes to the 2020 GMC Acadia’s seating arrangement and safety features. After all, what good is a car if it’s not going to keep you, your friends, and your loved ones safe in a worst-case scenario?

Each model of the 2020 GMC Acadia allows passengers to choose between five-, six-, and seven-passenger seating arrangements. You’ve got the classic two-row look for maximum cargo space, while you can also choose between two three-row seating configurations.

The Acadia Denali model offers the option for second- and third-row captain’s chairs, resulting in three rows for six seats total.

The 2020 GMC Acadia comes with all the safety features we’ve come to expect from modern automobiles, including a backup camera. Additional safety features include a rear-seat alert system, Teen Driver mode, blindspot monitoring, automatic pedestrian braking, adaptive cruise control, and lane-keep assist. The rearview mirror is also an HD monitor that “sees through” obstructions that a conventional rearview mirror could not.

The 2020 GMC Acadia brings the heat

The Acadia has always been a nice little midsize SUV, but the 2020 model brings seriously intriguing new features that prospective buyers in the midsize SUV market will be hard-pressed to ignore.
